When you're a solo business owner, everything can feel personal-
A post only gets two likes? People hate me.
A client tells you they're leaving? I must have done something wrong.
A lead ghosts you? I suck at sales.
One of the most humbling learnings of my adult life is that everything is emotional.
Neither you nor I, Reader, are as logical as we like to believe we are.
The first few lines of this email are a great example- we ride the rollercoaster of emotions every day as a business owner.
Motherhood opens up an entirely new black hole of emotion.
This shift in my business has been deeply emotional-
I've felt inspired, hopeful, anxious, nervous, embarrassed, overwhelmed...
But most of all, I've felt optimistic and excited.
The more I flesh out both the internal workings of mentorship and the external marketing side of it all, the more right this decision feels.
Emotion shouldn't run our business for us, but it definitely needs a place at the table.
A month or so ago, I was still planning on launching my Confident Coaching Pathway group program for coaches who wanted a clear, repeatable, non-macro focused coaching pathway for their 1.1 clients.
I was feeling SO much resistance to doing the things I needed to do to fill the waitlist and prepare for the launch.
At first, I had to ask myself if it was self-protection.
Was I resistant to doing those things just because if I didn't try and my launch failed, I could write it off as a lack of effort? Nope, that wasn't it.
Was I just overwhelmed by motherhood and being a primary parent and really didn't have the time to actually do what I needed to do? Also nope.
As I had evolved into motherhood, what I felt called to do in my business evolved as well.
Getting on calls with and holding space for the mothers I was already mentoring felt so right.
The work we were doing around strategy, sales and business structure was making a huge difference in their business and their lives.
I was already doing work that felt right, but I was trying to make myself fit into a mold that no longer fit this season of my life.
It wasn't just optimism or excitement, though...
I also felt nervous and embarrassed.
Did the world really need another business coach?
Was I really qualified to be giving business advice?
(🫠Duh, I'm an intelligent, hardworking woman, OF COURSE I had a ton of impostor syndrome about all of this.)
This is what I mean when I say we need to let our emotions sit at the table, but not run our decisions.
I can be nervous and also excited.
But nervousness, excitement, optimism and embarrassment need to be paired with research and logic.
As I started to put structure and shape to the idea of business mentorship for mothers,
I saw how how little support mothers in our industry actually have.
Which is INSANE because the majority of nutrition coaches and dietitians are women,
(estimates range from 55-80%, and up to 90% for dietitians)
and many of those women will become (or are) mothers.
Yes, there are other business coaches out there who support mothers who coach.
But with THAT many women in our industry, there are not enough legitimate, ethical, informed business coaches with the lived experience of running a business with small children.
So emotionally, this feels so right.
And logically, it makes sense business-wise.
So here I am-
moving into my new season of business as a mentor for mothers who want to build and grow their nutrition or fitness coaching businesses.
So I can help mothers make more money without burning themselves out or missing the important moments.
And to support mothers in making the right choices for them while holding space for the emotional experience of running a business, coaching clients AND being a parent.
If you're feeling strong emotions around your work, name them and give yourself space to explore why-
You don't have to let them run the show, but get curious about what they might be telling you.
